Today is Maundy Thursday, or Holy Thursday. It's the time in the life of the Christian church when we come together and share in Holy Communion as Jesus did with his disciples in the Upper Room. Many believe He was celebrating Passover with his disciples. Recent reports have questioned if it was Thursday or Wednesday. Whichever, he gathered and broke bread with them. Passover was and is a celebration for the Jewish people. While under slavery in Egypt, God sent plagues against the Pharaoh and his people. One of the plagues, which prompted him to free the slaves, was death of the firstborn. The Israelites marked their doors so that the plague would pass them over.
It prompted them to be freed. Hence, Passover.
As Jesus celebrated Passover, he instituted something new. Communion. This is my body, this is my blood.
Today we Christians gather and prayerfully consider the Last Supper. At the meal it's revealed one will betray Jesus. Another will deny Him.
Our hearts stir today and our souls respond to God's calling. Where will you be this evening? At home watching the Office? In church? Working?
